Overview:
The Nuchatlitz
tour departs from the town of Zeballos on the West Coast of
Vancouver Island. The Spirit of the West staff will be departing
from Quadra Island and Campbell River on the morning of the
tour, and drive the 3 hours to Zeballos. If you are traveling
without a vehicle and need transportation to Zeballos, just
let us know and we can help make arrangements.
Day Prior: If
you are unable to check in at our office on Quadra Island, please call
us the day before to confirm the exact departure time and location,
and if there are any last minute details.
Day 1: Leave
Quadra Island and Campbell River early morning to meet the rest of the
group in the town of Zeballos, a scenic 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive. To avoid
a long and strenuous first day paddle we will transfer out to the
Nuchatlitz by water taxi. This will take approx. 45 min. Once arriving
at our private dock we will pack our kayaks and go over the kayaking
basics and essential safety procedures before heading off on our
journey. Our first night will be spent somewhere out on one of the
remote islands within the marine park.
Day 2 -4: On
the Nuchatlitz tour there is no set itinerary, as we have plenty of
time to explore. The route will depend on weather conditions and the
groups desires. Our days will be spent exploring the picturesque
islands, lagoons, sea caves hidden behind cascading waterfalls, and
possibly a visit to the ancient burial caves of the Nuchalnulth
peoples. We will also take some time out for walks, beach combing, or
simply lounging and absorbing the magnificent surroundings. If we are
fortunate we will end our day with one of our famous West Coast
sunsets.
Campsites are
plentiful and scenically situated on either sand or pebble beaches,
grassy knolls or beneath the canopy of ancient rain forests.
Known for its
concentrations of wildlife, the Nuchatlitz will surprise sea kayakers
around every bend. The Nuchatlitz is a popular home for the adorable
sea otter. Not too many years ago the otter became almost extinct, and
yet today you can find rafts of up to 150 members. Although not
present on the small islands, Black Bears can be seen foraging the
shores of the larger islands. Wolves are rarely seen, but it is not
unusual to hear their howls in the dark of the night.
Day 5: This is
our last day to enjoy the marine environment of the West Coast. After
our morning paddle and lunch, our boat transport will pick us up and
take us back to Zeballos. Approximate return time to Campbell River is
7pm.
